Irvington
Irvington is one of NE Portland’s most storied neighborhoods—a residential district of grand historic homes, mature tree canopy, and wide, sidewalk-lined streets. Originally platted in 1887 as an exclusive residential suburb, Irvington was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 as the largest historic district in Oregon.
The neighborhood was developed on land settled by riverboat captain William Irving in 1851. Its developers envisioned a community where commercial activity was excluded from the interior to preserve residential character—a philosophy that still defines Irvington today.
